The Year in Review: How Superior Property Group Transforms Outdoor Spaces

Every season brings a different set of challenges and a different set of transformations. For the team at Superior Property Group, 2026 was a full one. Across Simcoe County, Muskoka, Barrie, the GTA, and everywhere in between, we worked on properties that ranged from raw, overgrown lots to polished commercial grounds, from sloped acreage that needed complete terracing to backyard pond installations that became the centrepiece of a family's outdoor life.

As we head into the planning season for 2027, here is a look at the types of work that defined this year and what we learned from doing it.

Excavation and Site Preparation

Excavation was, as always, the foundation of the year's work. Every project we took on, regardless of what it became in the end, started with a thorough site assessment and a clear plan for how the ground would be shaped before anything else was built on it. This is not a step that changes based on the size or complexity of the project. It is the constant. As we have covered throughout this year's blog content, starting with our post on how residential excavation sets the foundation for every outdoor project, everything lasting starts below the surface.

This year reinforced that point repeatedly. Properties that came to us with drainage problems caused by grading that had been poorly done years earlier. Hardscaping that had shifted and failed because the base preparation was inadequate. Driveways that looked like they needed repaving but actually needed their base rebuilt. The pattern is consistent: the visible problems on any property almost always trace back to what happened, or did not happen, underground.

Lot and Land Clearing

Clearing projects this year ranged from small residential lots being prepared for new construction to larger rural properties where decades of overgrowth had reclaimed what was once open land. Each one required the same selective approach: identify what stays, plan equipment access carefully, clear what needs to go, and leave the surrounding environment in better shape than we found it. Our post on lot clearing in Ontario documents the process in detail, but the short version is this: good clearing is not about how much you remove. It is about what you protect.

Custom Ponds

Custom pond builds were among the most rewarding projects of the year. Each one started with the same question: what is the client imagining? And each one ended with something that exceeded it. The full design and build process, from that first conversation through excavation, filtration, stonework, and the moment the water is turned on, is something we walk through in detail in our post on how a custom backyard pond is designed and built from start to finish.

What this year's pond projects reinforced is the importance of placement. The clients who were happiest with their ponds were the ones where we spent the most time on that single decision before anything else was determined. Getting it right sets everything else up to work.

Hardscaping

Patios, retaining walls, walkways, and stone features filled out the hardscaping side of the year. The consistent theme across all of them: the quality of the finished surface is inseparable from the quality of the base underneath it. Clients who had seen other contractors' work fail on nearby properties were particularly focused on understanding what made ours different. The answer was always the same. We covered this in our post on what makes a retaining wall last and our homeowner's guide to patios and walkways that hold up through Ontario winters.

Full Property Transformations

The most complex and most satisfying category of work this year was full property transformations. Raw land cleared, graded, shaped, hardscaped, and landscaped into finished outdoor living spaces that did not exist at the start of the season. These projects draw on everything we do and require the most coordination across phases. We documented the full arc of this type of project in our post on transforming raw land into outdoor living space, which remains one of the most comprehensive things we have written about how we work.

What the Year Confirmed

A few things this season reinforced that we already believed to be true:

  • Planning is never wasted time. Every project that went smoothly had good planning behind it. Every project that ran into difficulty had a planning gap somewhere.

  • The clients who are happiest at the end are the ones who were most involved at the beginning. The design conversation, the site assessment, the review of the plan. That investment at the start is what makes the delivery feel right.

  • Ontario's climate is unforgiving to anything built without full respect for it. Drainage, frost depth, freeze-thaw cycles, and soil movement are not edge cases. They are the design conditions every project is built around.

  • The land here matters. Simcoe County and Muskoka are genuinely special landscapes. The work we do on them carries a responsibility to leave them better than we found them.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Spring 2027 scheduling is already building. If you have a project in mind for next year, the time to start the conversation is now. Our post on how to plan a major landscaping or excavation project before spring explains exactly why winter planning leads to better spring results, and our post on why winter is the best time to plan your backyard pond is specifically for anyone who has been thinking about a pond build.
